    Confessions of a Gaming Dater

Favorite movies. TV shows. Video games. As strange as it may seem to non-geeks, for a geek, a potential partner’s taste in media of all kinds makes a big difference in whether or not they’re worthy of dating in the long-term. Some of my fondest memories with my former boyfriends involve playing Mario in the middle of the night together or conquering the latest indie game over the course of a weekend. Those times will always be beautiful memories even if those relationships didn’t last.

LFG Dating is a site that understands this. So when they approached me to try out their site focusing on setting up fellow gamers, I was excited to check it out. After all, there are lots more games to play and even more connections to make.

The first and most profoundly different thing about signing up for this site, which you won’t find elsewhere is the type of questions. Things like: how often do you game, which consoles you prefer to play and what kind of games do you play most often? This alone made it so much more fun to go through the process of signing up for an online dating site. I’ve signed up for them all and the LFG Dating process is so much more on par with my actual life that I immediately felt like I could trust it. The founders, Casey and Patrick, are real geeks and it shows in every thing that they do to make the site fit geek needs.

After signing up, I was amazed at just how many people were in my area. It wasn’t long before I was talking with a few guys who also play a lot of indie games on PS4. I definitely appreciate having something to talk about that isn’t the weather, my job or where I like to eat in my city. I know how tedious all those conversations are because I’ve engaged in them regularly for the last few months to less than desirable results.

If you’re a geek, you may already know this, but dating a gamer makes those first few days a hell of a lot easier. It gives you something to do together. Eases the transition from hanging out in bars and coffee shops to hanging out in one another’s spaces. These kinds of dates are truly so much less awkward than the standard dating affairs, because well, video games give us purpose! It allows us to have built in competitive prodding, which makes flirting easy. If you play co-op, you can try to win together, which is always a bonding experience.

There are so many games that make for great date nights. Super Smash Bros. Vintage picks like Super Mario Brothers and Duck Hunt. Even more modern games are insanely fun. Take a spin at multi-player Little Big Planet together and I dare you not to have an awesome time. Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture is also brilliantly worthwhile if for no other reason than the lovely art.

Online dating is a damn drag. Let’s just admit that now. So if you’re looking for a totally different experience, I really must recommend this geek-friendly version of online dating. After all, we can all use more reasons to make time for a little time with our favorite games, right?

    What I’m Reading on WattPad

Imagine a place where you could read books are the writer was writing them? Yeah, it sounds a little weird, but it’s actually incredibly interesting. And part of why it’s so interesting is because it’s a completely new concept being played out on WattPad. This is the future, people.

    wattpad

Here’s what I’m reading on WattPad right now:

150 Life Problems by Insane Demon

You have life problems. I have life problems. We have life problems. Life can kind of just be problems, you know? This ongoing story just keeps the problems coming. They are hilarious. They are sad. They are true. They are scary. They are life. Weird how life can kind of just… be everything and nothing? I know that seems entirely vague, so here’s an excerpt:

“When something goes wrong in your life…

    Just yell, “PLOT TWIST!!!”

Then walk away and move on.”

    Microwaved Love by Nikki

If you want to dive into the world of reading a story as a writer is tackling it, I recommend this one. Especially for the single ladies. It’s about high school love, which can be dumb, but I really enjoyed the writer’s self-awareness of the dumbness of it all.

How to Fall in Love by Myka

This story just wrapped up at the beginning of July, so you can totally binge it from cover to finish if you like. It’s silly and irreverent and will get you in a romantic mood, should you be so inclined. It feels a little like a memoir, but whose to say?

You know what else I love about WattPad? It’s the fact that commenters are part of the experience. Writers are getting to see what readers think as they go and readers can interact with each other as they read together. It’s so smart that I’m shocked it hasn’t been done before.

I was turned onto WattPad when they became a Geeks Go Glam sponsor at SDCC this year. We have a lot of love for the crew over there because they are so supportive of lady geeks online and elsewhere. If you haven’t checked out their totally free platform for finding great new reads, I really recommend it.

The Perfect Geek Girls Brunching Outfit

As a single geek girl, I tend to do three things every weekend: hit up a hip bar with my fellow lady geeks, listen to music very loudly and dance with my girls and then brunch at the best spots in town. We put so much thought into our dancing outfits, but my brunch outfits are always my favorites. Why? Because there’s something about an excuse to sit on a patio and drink coffee for hours on a Saturday that never gets old.

    brunching-700

To me, there are a few key tenants of a perfect geek girls brunching outfit: it should include hip accessories. A fun fedora. A great jewelry piece that harkens to your nerdiness. And of course, a chic, but comfortable outfit that will take you from brunch through the rest of your weekend.

Here’s what I’m wearing to brunch this weekend:

    • 3.1 Phillip Lim Sleeveless Geo Muscle Tank
    • Poupette St. Barth Crochet Shorts
    • Star Wars Imperial Logo Earrings
    • Alexis Bittar Long Spear Necklace
    • Marc by Marc Jacobs Mini Crossbody Bucket Bag
    • Scoop Medium Brim Fedora

Now that I’ve got the perfect concept for an outfit, I’m excited to check out a new brunch spot. The biggest question now is whether to go for a breakfast burrito or a pancake flight. Yum, yum, yum! Happy weekend!

Wardrobe Upgrades for the Single Geek Girl

Being a single lady geek means two things: one, you’re likely using technology to find your next date. And two, you’re probably thinking about non-cosplay wardrobe for the first time in a long time. I jest. But not really. Only a teeny, tiny bit of jest here.

Anyway, the point is that there really isn’t a better reason to start upgrading the basics in my closet than the anticipation of many a date. I mean, a girl’s gotta rock Bumble, you know? But the mall never works. And I want to feel authentically me, which is how I’ll ensure feeling awesome even if the conversation is a dud.

Time for a quick upgrade that represents who I am:

    1. A Notorious RBG Tank: Here’s the thing, if a guy can’t get down with RBG, then he probably isn’t for me. This is just the truth.

    2. Life Aquatic Nautical Tote: One of my standard questions on a first date is: if you could have any prop from any movie ever, what would it be and why? Well, we all know my answer comes directly from the Wes Anderson Department of Props. So yes, tote approved.

    3. Millennium Falcon Necklace: The new Star Wars movie is coming out, so it only seems natural to expand upon my current collection of geeky jewelry and add this clear staple to my wardrobe options.

    4. Gamer Cats Phone Case: At least three times per year, I update my phone case. Sometimes it’s a cat case. Sometimes it’s a gamer case. In this case? A cat gamer case! That’s some happiness making shit right there.

    5. Vans Veggie Leather Slip On: One of my best friends on the planet is a die hard vegan, so for her sake (and the adorable animals!) I’m trying out faux leather for a while. My new kicks seems like a logical place to start.

Now if I show up on any date in this wardrobe, well, I’ll be looking awesome. I have to give a special thanks to LookHuman for inspiring this outfit and partnering with me for the whole idea! I am so humbled that they want to help me look hot!
