The Perfect Geek Girls Brunching Outfit

As a single geek girl, I tend to do three things every weekend: hit up a hip bar with my fellow lady geeks, listen to music very loudly and dance with my girls and then brunch at the best spots in town. We put so much thought into our dancing outfits, but my brunch outfits are always my favorites. Why? Because there’s something about an excuse to sit on a patio and drink coffee for hours on a Saturday that never gets old.

    brunching-700

To me, there are a few key tenants of a perfect geek girls brunching outfit: it should include hip accessories. A fun fedora. A great jewelry piece that harkens to your nerdiness. And of course, a chic, but comfortable outfit that will take you from brunch through the rest of your weekend.

Here’s what I’m wearing to brunch this weekend:

    • 3.1 Phillip Lim Sleeveless Geo Muscle Tank
    • Poupette St. Barth Crochet Shorts
    • Star Wars Imperial Logo Earrings
    • Alexis Bittar Long Spear Necklace
    • Marc by Marc Jacobs Mini Crossbody Bucket Bag
    • Scoop Medium Brim Fedora

Now that I’ve got the perfect concept for an outfit, I’m excited to check out a new brunch spot. The biggest question now is whether to go for a breakfast burrito or a pancake flight. Yum, yum, yum! Happy weekend!

Wardrobe Upgrades for the Single Geek Girl

Being a single lady geek means two things: one, you’re likely using technology to find your next date. And two, you’re probably thinking about non-cosplay wardrobe for the first time in a long time. I jest. But not really. Only a teeny, tiny bit of jest here.

Anyway, the point is that there really isn’t a better reason to start upgrading the basics in my closet than the anticipation of many a date. I mean, a girl’s gotta rock Bumble, you know? But the mall never works. And I want to feel authentically me, which is how I’ll ensure feeling awesome even if the conversation is a dud.

Time for a quick upgrade that represents who I am:

    1. A Notorious RBG Tank: Here’s the thing, if a guy can’t get down with RBG, then he probably isn’t for me. This is just the truth.

    2. Life Aquatic Nautical Tote: One of my standard questions on a first date is: if you could have any prop from any movie ever, what would it be and why? Well, we all know my answer comes directly from the Wes Anderson Department of Props. So yes, tote approved.

    3. Millennium Falcon Necklace: The new Star Wars movie is coming out, so it only seems natural to expand upon my current collection of geeky jewelry and add this clear staple to my wardrobe options.

    4. Gamer Cats Phone Case: At least three times per year, I update my phone case. Sometimes it’s a cat case. Sometimes it’s a gamer case. In this case? A cat gamer case! That’s some happiness making shit right there.

    5. Vans Veggie Leather Slip On: One of my best friends on the planet is a die hard vegan, so for her sake (and the adorable animals!) I’m trying out faux leather for a while. My new kicks seems like a logical place to start.

Now if I show up on any date in this wardrobe, well, I’ll be looking awesome. I have to give a special thanks to LookHuman for inspiring this outfit and partnering with me for the whole idea! I am so humbled that they want to help me look hot!

Geek Fashion Inspiration: Hannibal’s Bedelia du Maurier

Every week this month I’m looking at one of the ladies from NBC’s Hannibal and analyzing their style. For this final post I’m looking at Hannibal’s psychiatrist Dr. Bedelia du Maurier. Bedelia was one of the most interesting characters in season one because she was one of very few  people whose loyalties remained ambiguous throughout. While it was strongly hinted at that she knew more about Hannibal’s real identity than she let on, the extent of that knowledge was never revealed. Bedelia’s style is, fittingly, very different from most of the other female cast members as she almost completely eschews intense patterns and sticks with solid, bold colors. Her style is put-together, almost unnervingly so, presenting a professional and distant facade to everyone who approaches her.

Bedelia owns one of the most iconic pieces of fashion seen on Hannibal, a red wrap-around shirt that hangs off her figure perfectly. If you’re looking to channel her style then this is a must buy.

Although consistently professional, Bedelia’s wardrobe is also subtly sexy. She  wears a lot of figure hugging mini and pencil skirts that show off her legs as she sits and listens to her patient.

To help her legs really make an impact Bedelia lengths them with killer heels. She tends to keep the style and colour simple to let the heels do the talking.

Bedelia often uses belts to maximise the impact of her waistline. This is a cheap and effective way to alter your wardrobe and give yourself a great figure.

We have seen Bedelia in a few dresses when she wants to change from her usual suit style. These too keep to her simple, form fitting style and avoid strong patterns. The cut of the dress is often the most design it needs.

To finish off her outfits Bedelia often wears classic suit jackets. This is the one place we have seen subtle patterns creep in to break up her outfits. Here’s some items we picked for her:

Wallis Red Plain Wrap Blouse: (£33)

Paule Ka Stretch Cotton High-Waisted Pencil Skirt: (£135)

Saint Laurent Classic Janis 105 Platform Pump: (£516)

Dorothy Perkins Black Basic Waist Belt: (£7)

Issa Short Sleeve Viscose Jersey Wrap Dress:  (£385)

Next Black and White Jacket: (£45)

Geek Fashion Inspiration: Hannibal’s Dr. Alana Bloom

Hannibal is one of the most visually striking shows on television. Not a scene goes by where every hue, pattern & angle that crosses your screen hasn’t been meticulously planned out to fit an overall vision. What you’ll also see on the show is a strong and varied cast of ladies; each one interesting and well-written.

Creator Bryan Fuller has repeatedly stated in interviews that he was unhappy with the lack of female characters in the show’s source material - Thomas Harris’ novel Red Dragon. He decided to change Alan Bloom to Alana and Freddy Lounds to Freddie, as well as adding in several all-new female characters including Beverly Katz and Bedelia Du Maurier.

Every character has a clear and definitive sense of style unique to them and it’s these that I’ll be looking at over the next five weeks as we countdown to season two. Every Friday I’ll have a look at one of the most prominent female characters from season one, examining their wardrobes, what they say about that character and how you can emulate it. Today I’m kicking things off with Dr. Alana Bloom.

    Alana Bloom

Alana’s season one wardrobe consisted mostly of bright reds and black; when she added in other colours they were usually jewel tones. The exception to this was in her choice of scarves which often went with a softer colour-palette.

Her wardrobe featured a lot of bold patterns, often in floral and geometric designs. These require a lot of confidence to wear but Alana has that trait in abundance. She balances these patterns out with vibrant block colours in her other pieces.

Her clothes are nearly always figure hugging but flattering. She often wears wraparound and sheath dresses or pencil skirts teamed with a well-cut blouse.

When she’s relaxing with friends we’ve seen Alana wearing some smart, neat cardigans and sweaters; these still maintain her usual choices in pattern and colour but are sometimes a little subtler than her work wardrobe.

The promo photos for season two have broken away from her signature colours significantly and show her wearing all green. If you want to be ahead of the game, choose rich shades such as bottle or British racing greens.

Here’s some inspiration items that might help you get your own Dr. Alana Bloom look down:

L.K. Bennett Morelle Dogtooth Jacket (£195)

    Lem Lem scarf ($140)

Red Valentino Lace Detail Floral Cardigan (£384)

Linea Cap Sleeve Print Boarder Dress (£95)

    Jaeger Pleated Skirt (£60)

Nine West Tatiana Green Shoes ($79)

Joules Women’s Navy Floral Shirt (£49)

A Lesson in Style from Miyazaki’s Leading Ladies

Hayao Miyazaki makes movies with incredible leading ladies. Whether it’s Kiki, the delivery service girl who rides on a broom or Princess Mononke, the tough warrior - these girls kick ass in so many ways. On some level, I’ve always wondered why American studios don’t take a note from Mr. Miyazaki’s book. And then I realized, Disney only took on one of his films when he put a boy in the lead in Ponyo, but even then, Miyazaki gets the last laugh. Ponyo is all about Ponyo. His films are beautiful, versatile and well-loved and nearly ALL of them feature a female in the lead. So it only seemed appropriate to spend some time admiring their fierce chicks in our latest style post.

If you haven’t seen these movies, goodness, please do. They are fun, whimsical, joyful and appropriate for everyone. Here’s a couple trailers to get you started:

Geeky Lycra: A Guide to Swimwear

It’s that time of year. That lycra tight, body revealing, tan creating time of year. I’m not necessarily modest, but I’m definitely uncomfortable when more of my skin is showing than not. With swimwear, it’s nearly impossible to reach a happy medium of comfort, sex, style and practicality. And then add geek into the mix. Cripes. Why don’t I just go shopping for a jackalope printed purse with alligator leather accents?!

    swim

So I’ve done the hard work for you and compiled a collection of suits which perfectly combine geek, coverage and swim-ability. Because yes, swim suits are for SWIMMING.

    Items Shown Above:

    • J. Crew Polka Dot Underwire Suit ($60)
    • Tardis Cutout Swimsuit ($48)
    • Black Milk AT-AT Swimsuit ($100)
