Geek Fashion Inspiration: Hannibal’s Bedelia du Maurier

Every week this month I’m looking at one of the ladies from NBC’s Hannibal and analyzing their style. For this final post I’m looking at Hannibal’s psychiatrist Dr. Bedelia du Maurier. Bedelia was one of the most interesting characters in season one because she was one of very few people whose loyalties remained ambiguous throughout. While it was strongly hinted at that she knew more about Hannibal’s real identity than she let on, the extent of that knowledge was never revealed. Bedelia’s style is, fittingly, very different from most of the other female cast members as she almost completely eschews intense patterns and sticks with solid, bold colors. Her style is put-together, almost unnervingly so, presenting a professional and distant facade to everyone who approaches her.

Bedelia owns one of the most iconic pieces of fashion seen on Hannibal, a red wrap-around shirt that hangs off her figure perfectly. If you’re looking to channel her style then this is a must buy.

Although consistently professional, Bedelia’s wardrobe is also subtly sexy. She wears a lot of figure hugging mini and pencil skirts that show off her legs as she sits and listens to her patient.

To help her legs really make an impact Bedelia lengths them with killer heels. She tends to keep the style and colour simple to let the heels do the talking.

Bedelia often uses belts to maximise the impact of her waistline. This is a cheap and effective way to alter your wardrobe and give yourself a great figure.

We have seen Bedelia in a few dresses when she wants to change from her usual suit style. These too keep to her simple, form fitting style and avoid strong patterns. The cut of the dress is often the most design it needs.

To finish off her outfits Bedelia often wears classic suit jackets. This is the one place we have seen subtle patterns creep in to break up her outfits. Here’s some items we picked for her:

Wallis Red Plain Wrap Blouse: (£33)

Paule Ka Stretch Cotton High-Waisted Pencil Skirt: (£135)

Saint Laurent Classic Janis 105 Platform Pump: (£516)

Dorothy Perkins Black Basic Waist Belt: (£7)

Issa Short Sleeve Viscose Jersey Wrap Dress: (£385)

Next Black and White Jacket: (£45)

Sophie Brown is one of the core contributors over at GeekMom and so far the only Brit, which sometimes makes her feel guilty for not being a bigger fan of Doctor Who and Sherlock.

She is a die-hard X-Phile who loves cross stitching and baking cupcakes whilst marathoning sci-fi shows on Netflix. She is also an occasional cosplayer, spends far too many hours reading and writing X-Files fanfiction, and is attempting to learn Latin this year. Geek Fashion Inspiration: Hannibal’s Beverly Katz

Every week this month I’m looking at one of the ladies from NBC’s Hannibal and analysing their style. This week it’s the turn of Dr. Beverly Katz, the female third of what Tumblr has dubbed Team Sassy Science. Beverly’s wardrobe has to be practical as she spends her days alternating between crime scenes out in the harsh Maryland climate, and the FBI forensics lab. We see her wearing lots of neutral tones and natural materials such as wool, leather and silk - it’s a wardrobe that helps cement her as one of the most sincere characters on the show.

Beverly frequently wears skinny jeans. She chooses style that are well cut so she can get away with them in the relaxed professional atmosphere of the lab. Jeans are a practical choice that will translate well between locations; they are also great travel clothes and comfortable for working long hours.

Button down shirts are Beverly’s usual choice for pairing with the jeans. She tends towards plain, deep blues which helps set her apart from many of the other female characters who all rely heavily on bright reds and strong patterns.

We often see Beverly outdoors wearing her collection of leather jackets; some in classic black and others in neutral brown tones. When combined with her large sunglasses this gives her an effortless look of old school cool.

Nearly all Beverly’s outfits feature wool somewhere. She has fleeced-lined boots, a fleece-lined leather jacket, and a seriously cozy looking wool hat, all of which add to her natural style.

Beverly tends to finish her outfits with a pair of knee high leather boots. While these are another concession to her job requirements - boots are always a good choice when outdoors in muddy or other wild terrain - they are also the perfect finish to her look.

Here’s a few items to help you get the Beverly Katz look:

    Acne Studio Sunglasses: (£190)

Pull & Bear Skinny Fit Jeans: (£26)

    Next Charcoal Knit Hat: (£10)

G by GUESS Women’s Hertlez Tall Shaft Wide Calf Riding Boots: ($70)

American Eagle Aerie Silky Button Down Shirt: ($40)

Selected Forma Leather Jacket F: (€240)

Geek Fashion Inspiration: Hannibal’s Freddie Lounds

Every week this month I’m looking at one of the ladies from NBC’s Hannibal and analyzing their style and today is the turn of online tabloid journalist Freddie Lounds. Freddie’s wardrobe is one of the show’s most distinctive, but when you look at it in depth it also provides some interesting allusions to her personality. Freddie is a vegetarian. This means she is quite possibly the only recurring cast member who has not eaten a human being cooked by Hannibal by the end of season one; however her wardrobe is filled with leathers, furs and animal prints.

    Freddie

Freddie wears prints from a variety of big cats; in fact she only wears prints from dangerous, predatory animals suggesting she is in some ways a hunter herself. In fact from certain perspectives, including Hannibal’s, Freddie might be the most dangerous character on the show as she is ruthlessly determined to uncover the truth.

A distinctive and unusual jacket is present in nearly every outfit. She has variously worn garishly bright plaid, fur-lined tweed that appears to glimmer, and even a poncho. When she chooses a more subtle style it will still have something about it to make it stand out such as a strikingly asymmetrical cut.

Freddie is usually seen wearing gloves; even indoors. Clearly this has the practical purpose of allowing her to access crime scenes without leaving fingerprints behind but it also adds an element of old fashioned style to her outfits. Her gloves always match her outfits either in color and material, or by incorporating a matching trim.

When she wears mostly clothes without patterns, she will often include a bold design somewhere else in the outfit such as a striking pair of lace tights or a strongly patterned scarf. Her clutch bags are also very eye-catching.

Although Freddie wears mostly dresses and skirts, we occasionally see her in very tight skinny jeans. Paired with one of her unusual jackets this can serve to create a strange and disconcerting silhouette which adds to her predatory persona.

Here’s a few items you might try to recreate the look:

Dorothy Perkins Closet Green Leather Look Dress (£50)

Pull & Bear High Heel Cut-Out Ankle Boots (£60)

Demi Ingeborg Black Leather Fur Gloves (£88)

Joe Brown’s Our Favourite Jacket (£70)

Next Sexy High Waist Skinny Jeans (£28)

    Cheetah Print Scarf ($15)

Dorothy Perkins Black Floral Net Nights (£7)

George Animal Print Knitted Sweater (£12)

Geek Fashion Inspiration: Hannibal’s Dr. Alana Bloom

Hannibal is one of the most visually striking shows on television. Not a scene goes by where every hue, pattern & angle that crosses your screen hasn’t been meticulously planned out to fit an overall vision. What you’ll also see on the show is a strong and varied cast of ladies; each one interesting and well-written.

Creator Bryan Fuller has repeatedly stated in interviews that he was unhappy with the lack of female characters in the show’s source material - Thomas Harris’ novel Red Dragon. He decided to change Alan Bloom to Alana and Freddy Lounds to Freddie, as well as adding in several all-new female characters including Beverly Katz and Bedelia Du Maurier.

Every character has a clear and definitive sense of style unique to them and it’s these that I’ll be looking at over the next five weeks as we countdown to season two. Every Friday I’ll have a look at one of the most prominent female characters from season one, examining their wardrobes, what they say about that character and how you can emulate it. Today I’m kicking things off with Dr. Alana Bloom.

    Alana Bloom

Alana’s season one wardrobe consisted mostly of bright reds and black; when she added in other colours they were usually jewel tones. The exception to this was in her choice of scarves which often went with a softer colour-palette.

Her wardrobe featured a lot of bold patterns, often in floral and geometric designs. These require a lot of confidence to wear but Alana has that trait in abundance. She balances these patterns out with vibrant block colours in her other pieces.

Her clothes are nearly always figure hugging but flattering. She often wears wraparound and sheath dresses or pencil skirts teamed with a well-cut blouse.

When she’s relaxing with friends we’ve seen Alana wearing some smart, neat cardigans and sweaters; these still maintain her usual choices in pattern and colour but are sometimes a little subtler than her work wardrobe.

The promo photos for season two have broken away from her signature colours significantly and show her wearing all green. If you want to be ahead of the game, choose rich shades such as bottle or British racing greens.

Here’s some inspiration items that might help you get your own Dr. Alana Bloom look down:

L.K. Bennett Morelle Dogtooth Jacket (£195)

    Lem Lem scarf ($140)

Red Valentino Lace Detail Floral Cardigan (£384)

Linea Cap Sleeve Print Boarder Dress (£95)

    Jaeger Pleated Skirt (£60)

Nine West Tatiana Green Shoes ($79)

Joules Women’s Navy Floral Shirt (£49)
