Announcing the Premiere of Tidal Wave Girls (video)

Today’s a big day for me. Why? Because I’m premiering my newest film, Tidal Wave Girls. It’s a documentary short about the everyday feminist - the mothers, grandmothers, sisters, friends, teachers - who impart the lessons of life on their daughters and sons about real equality. When we set out to make this film, we thought the best people to tell us about women today and in the future are the young ladies who are about to become women and the young men they will work with, marry, befriend.

    Watch Tidal Wave Girls now:

I am so excited to finally put this piece out into the world. It’s my firm belief that it’s those of us who don’t have fame and fortune that are changing the world. We are the ones who will define “women” in the next decade and century. But with this, we also have a responsibility to teach our young people what equality means. As the lovely Lachy points out, it’s important to teach young men the importance of women being intelligent and strong:

I asked him: “What kind of girl do you want to meet?”

He said: “A smart girl and a pretty girl.” A SMART girl, first.

It’s a testament to the women in his life. I bet they are a brilliant bunch.

I would be SO grateful and honored if you would share this short film with your family, friends, internet buddies and fellow bloggers. I made it for my mom, but I know there are millions of other moms that need to see it too.

Thanks, always, for your support. And thank you to the people that made this happen, in no particular order: Ann Aronson, Chris Gruszka, Jozef Conaway, Bill Magdalene, TJ Paulson, Allison O'Toole, Mollie Kjer, Vicki Bakk, Tish Watson and all the young ladies and gents who appeared in the piece and their families.

Announcing 30 Days of Doctor Who!

I am so excited it’s March 1st. And not just because the snow is melting in Minne. No, no. I’m excited because we are doing 30 straight days of Doctor Who madness on this here blog to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the series and as a pseudo-countdown to the return of Series 7 on March 30th.

I hope you’ll tell your friends!

    image

We’re enjoying 30 days of Doctor Who during the month of March on Being Geek Chic! Since the show is celebrating it’s 50th Anniversary and Series 7 is rebooting at the end of the month, it seemed like the perfect time to reflect on why we love the Doctor, wish we could apply for the job of Companion and create our own Sonic Screwdrivers. So while we can’t board the TARDIS, we can spend a ridiculous amount of time replicating Amelia Pond’s signature look. Tell your friends and stick around for more. Allonsy!

This Week in Geek is now Thankful Four… (& LEGEND Giveaway Winner!)

I had a realization this Thanksgiving: I don’t spend enough time dwelling on the things I am thankful for. I am not a huge, major Oprah fan - but one thing I have always admired about her is that she stresses the importance of gratitude on her shows, in her magazine and in interviews. So then I started thinking… How can I show more gratitude in my life? How can I make grace a regular practice in my day?

Alas, a new idea for a blog post came to be: Thankful Four. Four things I’ve felt thankful about in my week. Sometimes it will be links. Maybe other times notes or videos. Who knows. Either way, I’m looking forward to it. Yesterday’s video was a jump start. Here’s the rest for the week:

    1. The Emmas:

These two ladies make Being Geek Chic happen. Truly. And so I wanted to take a minute to tell you more about them.

Miss Emma Bauer (left) worked for me as an intern at a previous job. We bonded over our mutual affection for Bob Dylan and fashion. When she started her own blog (which she has since shuttered - otherwise I’d give some link love) I also learned she was a witty and charming writer. So I just had to recruit her. Every week, she highlights other geeks whom I have also come to admire and appreciate thanks to her great questions and insights.

Emma Carew Grovum (right) and I went to college together and worked at The Minnesota Daily on the same desk. Time passes, people drift, but when I ran into Emma earlier this year at The Hunger Games midnight premiere - I realized we shouldn’t have drifted so much. And so I did what everyone does when they run into someone in real life: I stalked her digital life. That’s when I realized she was a nerd food genius and just had to ask her to share her brilliant recipes here. You should check out her blog too: Kitchen Dreamer.

    2. NASA’s newest Hubble Telescope image

    A loose spiral galaxy

From NASA: The Hubble Space Telescope has spotted the spiral galaxy ESO 499-G37, seen here against a backdrop of distant galaxies, scattered with nearby stars.

Check out their “Image of the Day” gallery here.

    3. A new Catching Fire poster: it’s pretty much a gif on crack

    4. Penguin Books for offering up a giveaway for Marie Lu’s legend

Which gets us to the very important question of who won:

If you are Katie, pictured here, send me your full name and address to beinggeekchic(at)gmail(dot)com.

    Happy weekend.

Hey look, Being Geek Chic has a store now

See that cute iPhone cover? It will fit on the iPhone 5! Even before the iPhone 5 has hit your mailbox. Now you can buy that and help fund this here website and let everyone know that you’re a future Martha Jones/Donna Noble type. How cool is that?

In all realness, I’ve decided to start a shop with Society 6. Let me tell you some reasons why:

    1. I always wanted a super geeky iPhone cover that expressed my future career plans.

    2. Making blog content costs money.

    3. Making blog content takes time.

    4. I don’t have a lot of time or money.

    5. I love my readers and want to share more content with you.

    6. I think you might like this stuff too.

    7. Society 6 makes it so, so easy.

You may have noticed that I’ve been running ads for a while on the right sidebar and that has been going OK - But I hate how they add this ugliness to everything and are truly random. They’re unpredictable. So I started thinking: is there something that my blog readers might like to buy that I can offer? Something they might actually want? Or would just buy anyway?

So, check out the new, still being improved, store here.

And here’s the thing: buying something isn’t the only way to support this effort.

If you feel compelled, please help get the word out about these geeky items by:

    1. Pinning the products

    2. Tweeting about the products

    3. Sharing them with your Facebook friends.

I really appreciate every single one of you and wanted to do something that not only added some geeky beauty to your life, but made it possible for me to start paying contributors, covering the cost of DIY materials and maybe even expand on the video aspect of things.

If you have an idea for a product - let me know. I’m open to suggestions and would love to spread more geeky goodness via stationary, laptop skins and iPhone 5 cases.
