I have really come to love and adore the 11th. The 11th Doctor, that is.
While I know the Tennant fan girls outnumber me online and elsewhere, I feel like I’ve seen Matt Smith evolve from a great actor to an extraordinary one during his tenure as the most famous intergalactic time traveler in all the universe. So I decided to suspend regularly scheduled posts for the day to write a quick thank you note to the Doctor who made me fall back in love with bow ties.
Dear Matt Smith,
I think it’s when you said this…
"I am being extremely clever up here and there’s no one to stand around looking impressed! What’s the point in having you all?"
I laughed. And then I smiled. And then later on I smiled again to myself when no one was watching. I maybe even chuckled a little. Because you, in your very own goofy way, are charming.
The way you spun on your heels was charming. The way you pulled on the ends of your bow tie. The way you swished your hair - always to the left. The way you looked at River. The way you patted Rory on the back. The way you hugged Amy. The way you studied Clara. You have a knack for connecting people - making them feel special. And that goes beyond the characters. That goes down deep through digital film to nanotubes and into our television screens all the way to the eyeballs of your eager audience.
Please know that then you leave the show, you also leave me and many others with incredible memories and friendships. These are side effects of a cultural phenomenon that is bigger than any one actor or Steven Moffat or the BBC or even the big blue box - but you, specifically, made a mark on this world. You took a tradition and you made it your own. That’s no easy task. And now every time I put on a bow tie and slip my arms through a tweed blazer I will think of you. And I will be cool.
With love and admiration,
Liz
Tell me friends: what will you miss most about the 11th?
Dear Doctor,
How much more does heartbreak hurt when you have two hearts? Is there double the ache of loneliness? Double the pain when you lose someone dear? Do both hearts beat twice as fast in the heat of rage? Or just one? Forgive me for being so forward, but I worry about those hearts. I do.
While I accepted long ago that you would not be picking me up in your magical blue box, I still see so much of myself in your life. And even though I live in a linear world where minutes move forward and never back, seconds can never be relived and days are crossed over with an X on the calendar only to be revisited in photographs and diary pages - I still know what it feels like to be transformed by time. To be caught up in the wrinkles it leaves on your heart. (Or hearts in your case.) To be overwhelmed with a sense of wonderment at what can be. To be consumed by the unknown because it’s so much more promising than the known.
We share something I so rarely find in others: an obsession with time.
I can’t think of a single example of the Doctor drinking alcohol ever in the series, but that didn’t stop me from taking the opportunity to make a green cocktail. You guys, it’s green. And not like, lime green. It’s practically freaking electric green. It’s alcoholic. It’s delicious.
Video of me making this cocktail and being slightly over excited about it after the jump…
It’s not just Donna Noble that wants to be the Doctor. Sure, being a companion is great, but being witness to space and time history over and over again? I could do that job. Sign me up.
It’s a lonely life, but let’s gloss over that for a minute and pretend like I’m going to work… as the Doctor.
Remember when I told you that I had never seen Doctor Who? Well, with temps over 100 in Minneapolis much of the last month I’ve been taking in LOTS of Doctor Who in the air conditioned comfort of my home. Slowly, I’m falling in love with the Doctor and his adventures. Mostly, I’ve come to appreciate the Doctor’s attitude. It was this quote that really stuck with me:
Rose to alien: “If you’re an alien, how come you sound like your from the North?"
The Doctor: “Lots of planets have a North."
It such a simple throw away joke, but it stuck with me. Our universe is bigger than us. If you can get out of your head and appreciate that fact, then you can always escape into the fun of fictional universes.
I decided I’d like to remind myself of this more often, so I’ve created an iPhone and Android background with the quote on it. And some TARDIS love too.
