    Become a Smartphone Photography Pro

Friends. I know most of you don’t live in Denver. BUT! For the small, small, small portion of you that do (hi, 47 of you last month according to Google Analytics!) - I have a thing I want to see you at! Hooray.

I’m going to be teaching a Smartphone Photography Class at Share Denver next month. To be precise, it’s on Wednesday, Aug. 5th. Share Denver is an amazing organization in the Park Hill neighborhood of Denver where makers of all kinds share their skills with others. From knitting to kimchi making, it’s a lot of fun. In my class, you’ll learn lots of things, but we all prefer clarity so:

    - You’ll learn how to take pictures that are frame worthy using nothing more than your smartphone and a few simple accessories and a mix of recommended apps.

    - You’ll learn the basics of photography composition, exposure and lighting using a Smartphone as your tool.

    - You’ll learn how to use some basic and inexpensive tools that you can pick up to improve your photos should you wish to go the next step.

So, make it happen! Join me! I’d obviously love to have you. You can register for the class here.

Need a Last Minute Halloween Costume?

I’ve been planning my Halloween costume for months because it’s a co-costume between the feline in my house and I. Don’t judge. I promise, it’s not weird. But for those that are a little less planful, we have a couple BGC costumes that you can make with stuff around your house or in your craft drawer.

    How about Last Minute Katniss?

    • DIY Mockingjay pin
    • DIY Arrows
    • DIY Quiver

Want a tech themed costume? How about Instagram Filters?

    • Be the Toaster Filter!
    • Or the Sutro Filter!

Or you could be the night sky!

This was my back-up plan costume for this year. Simply take one of your plain black tees and draw a constellation on it or cut it out. You can even do it with a hole punch to punch out each of the stars in your shirt like I did with my tablet case.

    Instagram Accounts I Freaking Love

I’ve veered into full on obsessed with Instagram. I have all kinds of wild ideas for my account that involve fun new video projects in the next few months (so let’s follow each other! @lizgiorgi) - but until then - let’s meet some of the people who make my feed a freaking joyous place every day.

    Our Nerd Home

The folks behind Our Nerd Home have a really cute life. Basically, they post all their nerdy DIY projects for their home. It’s charming and fun and always inspirational. Their blog is a worthwhile stop too.

    Stone and Violet

So this is not some big secret, but I freaking love rocks. I mean, in a way I know I’m fully addicted to them and that’s probably not great… but oh well. I see a rock shop anywhere in the world and I need to go. Stone and Violet is an online rock shop (they also sell beautiful shelving and wood works) that manages to feed my obsession beautifully.

    Melissa Creates

Shop owners often have beautiful instagram accounts. It’s obvious, right? They need beautiful images of their products to sell them. One of those people is Melissa Creates, who always reminds me that I don’t use enough of my geeky mugs.

Who do you love to follow on Instagram? Share in the comments or on the social medias!

Best of Lady Geek Cyber Monday Deals

So it’s Cyber Monday. I know it’s supposed to be about gifts, but in case you’re like me, this is your chance to get some great Lady Geek gear at a reduced price. Here are some of my favorite picks for yourself or your recipients:

ShadowPlayNYC: These lovely ladies are offering 15% to 30% off on their space gear with a variety of coupon codes. The infinity scarves are so soft and wonderful, you won’t regret it.

Rifle Paper Co: I love, love great stationary. For lady geeks looking for wanderlust in 2014, you need to check out their line of travel calendars. And their iPhone cases. I picked up the London one because LONDON! Everything is 30% off with CYBER2013.

LEGO: Amazon cut prices by as much as 40% on lots of great LEGO sets, including Marvel sets for my Avengers loving friends. And yes, the Amazon deals are better than the LEGO store deals today.

BioWare Store: I love my N7 ANGL hoodie wayyyyy more than any other hoodie I have ever owned. That hoodie and all their other hoodies are $10 off. Tees are all $15.

Black Milk Clothing: Overpriced leggings become… less overpriced today. Everything is 30% off. This is one of the only sales they will have all year so it’s best to get on that now.

PhotoJoJo: Virtually everything in their store will be some percentage off today through one of their flash sales. Follow them on Twitter and keep checking back for good deals. I’ve got my eye on the Digital Holga Lens, which is $5 off today.

Stickygram: One of my favorite gifts I bought for someone else last year was a set of Instagram magnets of my adventures with my Mom. The magnets are the right size and super fun. The sheets of 9 are 25% off today.

Be the ultimate hipster with my DIY instagram Halloween costume (video)

Took less than 30 minutes to make two costumes. People want to instagram my instagram. How hip is that?

    halloween-me

And much like Sheldon, TJ is not down for most of my couples costume ideas.

    halloween-tj

He was cool with it though.

And here’s how the whole thing went down, in audio/visual format:

If you’ve still got parties to attend this week or just make every single kid that comes to the door hold up your costume in front of their costume, then here’s how you can do it too:

    1. Get yourself some poster board.

    2. Measure and cut out a frame.

    3. Get yourself some transparent cellophane (like this stuff - or just go to the craft store and say, “I need that clear stuff that has some color in it that they sometimes wrap around Easter baskets.” They’ll know what you’re talking about.)

    4. Cut out your cellphone wrap and tape it down.

    5. Pose.

Beware of the urge to instagram yourself as an instagram.
