It was an exciting year at Being Geek Chic. To celebrate an even bigger year ahead - here’s 2011 in review.
In January, BGC presented you the “Literate Geek’s Guide to Buying vs. Borrowing Books.” If your New Year’s resolution is to stop buying so many books, then this is definitely the chart for you.
BGC gave away some printable Valentine’s for your lover and friends in February. February isn’t far off, so bookmark those resources again for 2012, because they’re still relevant and adorable.
In March, I was thinking big and had lots of new ideas. That’s why this compilation of the best “idea” notebooks was so timely. I always suggest you keep a small notebook in your backpack or purse that you use exclusively for getting your ideas down on paper. If you’re resolving to write more - pick up one of those idea notebooks!
I tried out my first Kickstarter campaign in April and chronicled the experience here. (Sidenote: It was successful!)
In May, researchers announced that you literally ARE what you READ. Amazing.
Summer always means more sunshine and of course, SUMMER MOVIES. This June list of summer movies for the geeky couple still seems great in retrospect. (I think One Day probably should have been omitted, but you win some/lose some.) In fact, the BF and I just watched Midnight in Paris again this week.
If your New Year’s resolutions include save more money: then this list of ways that the library saves you some serious cash is a worthy read from July.
In August, not only did I question whether to sleep or try to get on Pottermore - but I actually did finally get on Pottermore and fell in love with the never-before-read back-stories. The passion has since subsided, but I’m still hopeful for more great stuff in from Pottermore in 2012.
September will be known at Target Corp. for the massive fail that occurred when Missoni for Target crashed their websites. I was glad that we had a developer’s perspective on why it all went so terribly wrong.
My love of The Hunger Games was a theme throughout the year, but nothing proved it more than my DIY’d Katniss Everdeen costume in October. Still love that costume! Of course, I can’t forget about the Mockingjay pumpkin template that I was so happy to see BGC reader’s using. That was a real treat too.
November is a time of thanks, but in 2011 I felt especially thankful for female heroines in our books, movies, comics and media. Whether it was Hermoine, Lisbeth or Katniss, there were a lot of great women holding their own in our entertainment this year.
I’m one of those weirdos who can never quite get used to Christmas being over once it has come and gone. That’s why this post about “A Very Harry Christmas” Spotify soundtrack is still in my mind as I make some appetizers for our New Year’s gathering this evening. Who says you can’t listen to Christmas music all throughout the year?
I feel so thankful that this blog has continued to grow. Here’s hoping 2012 brings more great things.
XO
My brother made the best birthday card ever this year. Last year, we went to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter around this time and it was such a great experience for all three of us. Here’s his sweet blog post about it.
I’ve always preferred making birthday cards for people as opposed to buying them. I feel it’s a far more heartfelt and meaningful way to show someone how you feel. Moreover, I quite enjoy the challenge that goes into making a card that really connects with a person (and has special meaning for only that person).
With that in mind, behold my sister’s birthday card for this year. She is about as big a Potterhead as a person can be, so this seemed appropriate.
Pictured are my renditions of my sister Elizabeth (she of Being Geek Chic), her boyfriend and my friend TJ (he of Son of Minnesota), and myself. It’s funny because, a drunk man in a Caribou Coffee once told us we had a Harry, Ron and Hermione vibe about us. I leave it to those who know us to ponder both my drawing ability (or lack thereof) and the astuteness of that drunk Caribou patron…
Happy birthday, sis.
