Ten Movies that are Happiness Makers

Films, more than any other thing in my life, are like a shot of Xanax right to the heart when times are tough. Whether I’m stressed or sick or jealous or tired, these ten movies lift my spirits every time. I call them, “Happiness Makers”.

    10. Roman Holiday

Be prepared to have Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck charm the hell out of you. I like to imagine myself going on a trip like this one, wearing flouncy dresses and getting into trouble with my Boyf, scooting about here and there.

    9. Midnight in Paris

I am obsessive about this movie. I know it’s polarizing, but I dare you to not be completely charmed by Adrian Brody’s Dali. Hear that? I dare you.

    8. Bridget Jones’s Diary

So stereotypical, I almost hate to put it on the list, but come on. It’s hilarious. HI-LAR-IOUS. Total guilty pleasure.

    7. The Sessions

John Hawkes is so fucking under-rated, it kills me. Why, why doesn’t the whole world know about this man instead of that lame-ass Gerard Butler?! Sure, there are elements of this that are heartbreaking, but when a character is so charming, fascinating and real, well, it fills you up with a warm happiness that I can’t describe. You just have to watch it.

    6. The Big Lebowski

I don’t need to say anything. It’s too genius to bother with verbose descriptions of its brilliance.

    5. You’ve Got Mail

Nora Ephron’s best movie. Hands down. And that dial up noise makes me giggle like a nostalgic old woman remembering her first time.

    4. Wall-E

My favorite romantic comedy on the list. Two robots in love. What nerd can’t relate?

    3. Raising Arizona

Oh hey, Nicholas Cage was hilarious once.

    2. Safety Not Guaranteed

Time travel rom-com. Bunch of magazine journos on a road trip. All my favorite shit rolled into a goofy movie that I recommend to everyone in that shouty sort of way that convinces absolutely no one, but makes me feel better every time: “YOU MUST SEE THIS MOVIE. ARGH”

    1. The Princess Bride

Still my favorite movie after all these years.

What movies are happiness makers for you?
