When I make a promise, I follow through. Today, the secret to my DIY bow tie that first appeared in my “Lady Doctor” outfit post a few weeks back.
And trust me, it’s so, so easy, you’ll be making bows all night. Which as you can see by my photo here… that’s exactly what I did. Don’t judge until you’ve started fluffing your bows. Video and instructions after the jump!
Here’s how you do this:
Start with a piece of ribbon or fabric and cut it into two pieces. One piece should be about 4 inches long by 2.5 inches wide. The second piece should be about 2 inches long by 1 inch wide. (Depending on the size of the bow, you can go larger or smaller than this, but just keep the general ratios of 2 to 1.)
Fold each side of the fabric to the center. This creates a strip with the raw portion of the fabric on the interior.
Now fold the long piece length-wise into the center. Pin it so you can create the center part.
Repeat step 2 with the small piece of fabric.
Wrap your small strip of fabric around the center of your larger strip. Make it slightly tight, because you’ll want to “fluff” out the larger bit of the bow later.
Use a dab of super glue on the back of your small strip to keep the bow in place.
Now pull your sewing pin out and slip a safety pin through the back of the small strip. You can glue this too if you want it to be more secure.
Finally, use your fingers to pull out the folds of the larger strip a smidge. I licked my finger tip and then put my finger inside the bow and pulled it out a little to get that look.
Wear it and enjoy!
We’re enjoying 30 days of Doctor Who during the month of March on Being Geek Chic! Since the show is celebrating it’s 50th Anniversary and Series 7 is rebooting at the end of the month, it seemed like the perfect time to reflect on why we love the Doctor, wish we could apply for the job of Companion and create our own Sonic Screwdrivers. So while we can’t board the TARDIS, we can spend a ridiculous amount of time replicating Amelia Pond’s signature look. Tell your friends and stick around for more. Allonsy!
